Growth is usually celebrated immediately.
More people.
More activity.
More demand.
More visibility.
In faith contexts, growth is often interpreted as confirmation — a sign that things are “working.”
But increase does not automatically mean health.
Sometimes it means strain.
Growth answers what is happening.
Readiness answers what can be sustained.
Many ministries grow faster than their:
leadership capacity
coordination systems
communication structures
pastoral coverage
When readiness lags behind growth, pressure builds quietly.
And pressure always finds a place to land — usually on people.
Strain doesn’t announce itself loudly.
It shows up as:
leaders becoming constantly busy
volunteers feeling stretched thin
decisions taking longer
confusion increasing behind the scenes
Outwardly, things look successful.
Internally, people are compensating.
Strain hides behind momentum.
Faith language can unintentionally soften warning signs:
“God will strengthen us”
“Let’s just press in”
“Sacrifice is part of the calling”
These statements aren’t wrong —
but when used to avoid system design, they delay necessary intervention.
Spiritual encouragement should support people — not excuse structural neglect.
When strain is ignored:
exhaustion becomes normal
burnout is spiritualised
mistakes increase
turnover quietly rises
People don’t leave because vision is wrong. They leave because the cost of carrying it becomes too high.
Healthy growth:
increases clarity, not confusion
distributes responsibility
improves coordination
strengthens resilience
It doesn’t feel frantic. It feels intentional.
Not all growth is fruit. Some growth is pressure revealing weak structure.
Wisdom discerns the difference.
If growth increases exhaustion, readiness is missing.
